Frequently Asked Questions
What is faith House?
Faith House is a Christian maternity home for single, pregnant women who need a safe place to live.
Who will Faith House serve?
Faith House will serve single, pregnant women at least 18 years of age with no other children. These women may stay up to one year following the birth of their child.
What will Faith House offer young mothers?
Faith House offers housing in a loving, accepting Christian family environment with live-in houseparents, which includes group bible study, prayer, and spiritual counseling. Faith House will also offer assistance with completing education, obtaining employment, and life skills training in various areas like parenting, money management, healthy relationships, and more.
Where is Faith House located?
Our nearly 5000 square foot house is located in Walden, in a rural area of Orange County, NY. We will accept residents from Orange and the surrounding counties. The address of the home is not publicized to protect the safety of our residents.
Why is there a need for Faith House?
Unfortunately, there are many women in our communities who are facing the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy while also living in unsafe or unstable housing. Once the pregnancy is apparent, some are no longer welcome in a parent or boyfriend's home and have no where else to turn. Research shows that pregnant women without stable housing often do not receive adequate prenatal care and their babies are at much greater risk for low birthweight, premature birth, and a myriad of social and health problems that can follow them throughout their lives. Already many women in need have reached out to us for help. We currently receive approximately one call per month, and expect those numbers to increase once we are open. Our mission is to offer pregnant women tangible help at a most vulnerable time in their lives. Faith House will be the only home for adult pregnant women in the mid-Hudson Valley.
How will Faith House Be Staffed?
One of the cornerstones of our program is that staff will live onsite with the residents to provide 24 hour assistance. The House Managers will be a husband and wife team who will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the home, and for establishing a warm, Christian family atmosphere. They will provide an example of a family for women who perhaps have never had that experience. In addition to overseeing the home, the House Managers will provide spiritual guidance and be available to the residents for prayer and Bible study. House Assistants will provide relief coverage. A Case Manager will work with each woman to develop and implement an individualized goal plan to address her needs in the areas of health, parenting, relationships, legal issues, financial issues, education, and employment. When we are ready to begin hiring, position announcements and applications will be posted on our website.
When will Faith House open?
Some necessary renovations are currently being made to the home. This type of work often takes longer than anticipated as additional issues to be addressed become known. Once the renovations are complete and the staff has been hired, we plan to open in the Spring of 2020.
How is Faith House funded?
Faith House receives no government funding. We are entirely supported by the generosity of individuals, churches and businesses in our community, as well as several grants from private family foundations whose funding priorities align with our mission. Our donors were able to raise 100% of the purchase price of our home so that we own it debt-free! We have also been abundantly blessed by inkind donations of professional services, construction labor, clothing, furniture and supplies from many generous people who believe that a home for pregnant women is needed in Orange County.
How can we support Faith House?
There are so many ways to become involved and there is a place for everyone! Prayer support is essential, as are ongoing monthly financial donations. There are numerous volunteer opportunities to prepare the house, and there will be additional opportunities once the house is open to provide transportation, assist with maintenance and yard work, and provide classes and other activities for the residents. In addition, you may purchase items off our Amazon wish list. Especially needed now are comforters, blankets, sheets and towels.
